Sylvan Karchmer papers, 1933-1982.

The collection is organized into four series: I. Correspondence, 1933-1985, (11/2 boxes) II. Works: Short Stories, 1940-1982 (4 boxes), III. Works: Plays, 1953-1977 (2 boxes), and IV. Career and Personal (1 box). The Correspondence series consists mainly of outgoing letters written to Miss Gladys Moore, a lifelong friend and correspondent. The Works series include published and unpublished drafts primarily of Short Stories and Plays. Career and Personal series includes book reviews by Karchmer, clippings, play production materials and miscellaneous items collected by Karchmer.

Sylvan Nathan Karchmer was born in Dallas, Texas, on December 31, 1911. After graduating from high school, he worked for the petroleum industry until 1942, when he served as an enlisted man in World War II and was posted to North Africa and Italy. In 1947, Karchmer began his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1949 and Master of Fine Arts in 1950.
